American & Mexican Flags

Piedras Negras, Mexico flies their giant flag on their
side of the border and Eagle Pass, TX flies the
American flag on our side of the border. This Mexican
flag is not the largest, I am told. Mexico flies a larger
one on days when it is not so windy.

Today's Ride

It was a rough one out there today with a 20+ mph wind out of the northwest and 90 degrees F. After some tire problems I cut the ride short at 25 miles and retreated to the pool.

Fort Duncan

Fort Duncan is one of the local historic attractions in Eagle Pass. We visited there on Saturday and had an interesting visit with the curator who knows all the local history.

The medical center across the street from where we are living is the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center.

Lucky Eagle Casino

The main entertainment attraction in Eagle Pass is the Lucky Eagle Casino, which we have frequented on the two Saturday nights we have been here.

Uvalde, TX

Today we motored 60 miles northeast to Uvalde and the Garner Museum, home of artifacts of John Nance (Cactus Jack) Garner. He was a long serving US Congressman and was FDR's vice president. He and FDR had some disagreements. Cactus Jack was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president but when FDR announced a run for a third term that ended it for Cactus Jack and he retired to his home area, Uvalde.

Today's Ride

I lost the satellite when I went into the Edge at mile 25. Click here to see the data that I have.

The Eagle Pass School District Student Activity Center is about a mile down the road. It has everything - arena, football/soccer fields, baseball, softball and a fine arts center that Pam would like. Something for everyone here. There are also some pretty nice fields in town near the Rio  Grand as well.

Maverick Nursing and Rehab, Eagle Pass, TX

Maverick Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

Here is Barb's workplace. It is on the campus of the Fort Duncan
Medical Center. Barb says the challenge of working in a skilled
nursing and rehab facility is documenting treatment to be in
compliance with Medicare standards using the computer
software program.

Today's Activites

After a visit to The Edge I attended a meeting of the Maverick  County Retired School Personnel Association.

Then I went down the street to the library inquiring about a wine tasting being hosted by their foundation at the International Business Center which is just down the street from here. The wine tasting is Saturday.

Across the street from the library is the (abandoned) Eagle Pass American Legion.
This is what an American Legion Post looks like when it fails to renew
and activate members and not seek out new members.

Today's Ride

Click here for today's ride data

Today's ride took me past the Eagle Pass Golf Course which is right at the Rio Grande.

Across the Rio Grande is Mexico. There were people fishing from the Mexican side.

Here is the golf course looking west at what the locals call Bridge Number 1.
There are three bridges crossing the Rio Grande, two for vehicles and one for trains.
There is more traffic coming this way than going to Mexico, evidence of outsourcing I suppose.

Sweet Times Vol 2 No 4

Here is the last edition of Sweet Times in case you missed it. The next edition is due out at the end of Q1. You will have to blow it up to read it. Sorry about that.

Del Rio, Tx

Today we drove over to Del Rio, which is about 60 miles west, and visited about the only two tourist attractions we could find. The first was Brown Plaza.

The second was the Whitehead Memorial Museum which told the very interesting early history of Texas. Barb landed herself in jail while in Del Rio.

Eagle Pass, Tx

I had a productive first week in Eagle Pass. I attended a meeting of the Eagle Pass Evening Lions Club and met the Lion President Ramon on the right and member Jaime on the left.

The club has their own building and will be putting on the Los Noches Mexicanas (International Friendship Festival) March 27, 28 and 29. This event will be held in Shelby Park, which is right under the bridge that goes to Mexico.

Eagle Pass, Texas

Barb's colleagues at Maverick Nursing and Rehab in Eagle Pass, TX suggested to her that I write a book about Barb working and me playing. I usually turn to technology to solve issues so I will write my book via this blog that I started sometime ago but never really used it.
I will start with this picture of the apartment that the company Barb signed up with, Delta Healthcare Providers, set up for us. Thank you Nicole for getting us out of the icebox that is Minnesota to the oven here in southwest Texas. This place has a pool and exercise room. Barb will use the exercise room mostly, while I have signed up with the Edge, which has all the equipment plus spin bike classes, which I use, and zumba that I don't use but Barb might. Carlos, the trainer there, has been helpful in instructing on some exercises that will help biking. More on that later.

People ask what I do here. I do the same things here that I do at home: Work out in the gym about every day, ride bike outdoors and tend to Legion matters via phone, email, etc. (I am commander of Legion Post 377 in Delano, MN.) I am also helping to organize the Iroquois High School class of '64 reunion, which is 50 years in case you are mathematically challenged.

Visit Sweet Times blog again for daily (almost) updates.
